Financial Wisdom I’d Share With My Younger Self

Some of the best real-world financial advice we’ve seen comes from regular women like us, who have learned through personal experience.

That’s why we’ve compiled some of our favorite insights, by women, for women.

General Financial Wisdom

  • Only make financial decisions you understand.

  • Go through your credit card statement every. single. month.

  • Spending $15 every day equals $5,475 in a year. Saving $15 every day equals $5,475 a year. Which would you rather?

  • Pay attention to your pay stub and how much is coming out for taxes.

  • There’s no cap on how much you can make, the only cap is you. Don’t limit yourself.

  • Take advantage of learning opportunities provided by your employer.

Spending Money

  • Don’t go broke trying to look rich.

  • Only buy something on sale if you would buy it at full price.

  • Sit down and add up all of your take-out food spending. It’s probably more than you realize.

  • When in doubt, don’t count Dollar Tree out!

  • Just because you can buy it doesn’t mean you should.

  • After you start a trial subscription, cancel it IMMEDIATELY. If you use it, great, renew it. If you don’t use it, you never get charged.

  • You don’t need to buy that online program. You can research and YouTube a lot of the same information—for free.

  • Time sale countdowns are just a form of mind manipulation. Don’t fall for it.

  • Eat before you go grocery shopping; you buy less food when you feel full.

Saving Money

  • Make your coffee at home.

  • Automate savings. Set it and forget it.

  • Saving money CAN be as fun as spending. Perception is everything.

  • Your savings should be in a High Yield Savings Account (HYSA) so it can make money. Every bit helps.

  • Start your retirement as soon as possible, even if it’s only $10 a paycheck.

  • Stop buying single servings of prepackaged snacks. Buy in bulk and make your own single servings.

  • Every time you get a raise at work, increase your 401(k) contribution. Even if it’s only by 1%. You won’t miss it.
